Cohesion Policy: getting the most from EU Funds for growth and jobs - Commission moves to help

Measures to help crisis-hit countries to use much needed EU funds have been proposed today by the European Commission. The measures would help these Member States to tackle youth unemployment, to support small and medium sized business and to pay for key infrastructure projects. In the absence of this proposed measure, Cohesion Policy investments for growth could be lost because of a lack of time to spend the money or because of the difficulty of finding national and private co-finance in the current economic climate.

Greece: Achievements and developments in the field of Structural and Cohesion Funds

The 4th Quarterly Report of the Task Force for Greece highlights the main achievements and developments in the field of Structural and Cohesion Funds.: -The absorption target for 2012 was reached to a level of 87,3%. No funds have been decommitted in 2012, but there is a risk of decommitment in 2013; - In March 2013 the absorption rate stood at 56,1% ; - Projects concerning entrepreneurship have the highest absorption rates (75%). Spending on environmental projects is low (15%); - The number of sleeping projects was reduced by half; - The deadline for closing projects from the previous programming period was extended until December 31 2013. - 15 out of 181 priority projects have been completed, 86 are under implementation and on track, 70 projects need to be accelerated, 15 projects are unlikely to be concluded, 1 project has been cancelled.

Task Force for Greece - 4th Quarterly Report: Support for growth and jobs in Greece

Press release: The Task Force has made steady progress in assisting the Greek authorities, in a spirit of solidarity, to help implement a wide range of reforms agreed in the context of the economic adjustment programme for Greece and to maximise the use of EU Structural Funds. The assistance provided by the Taskforce builds on the commitment of the Greek authorities to implement these reforms, which are necessary to rebuild an economy that is conducive to growth and job creation, as set out in the Memorandum of Understanding with Greece.

Measures to tackle youth unemployment in Greece using Structural Funds

Together with Greek authorities the Action Team of the European Commission reprogrammed EUR 1,15 billion for projects aimed at combating youth unemployment . 'A national youth action plan was announced in January 2013. Up to now, an amount of approx. EUR 635 million has targeted 182 812 beneficiaries while an additional budget of EUR 517 million targeting 350 000 participants has already been committed and is being used to promote youth related activities under the action plan. The revisions of 8 ERDF and 4 ESF programmes were submitted in Q3 2012 and programmes were approved in December. These revisions have the following aims:
